Every term students in the Full-time English Language Program are offered to participate in a mid-term trip. Over the spring break we traveled to “Minaki Yurt Adventures” in Ontario and had an amazing time! Cheri (an ELP instructor), myself and 9 students were gone for three days and enjoyed many activities such as kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and ziplining.

When we arrived at MYA (Minaki Yurt Adventures) we were greeted by our wonderful hosts; Nadene and Jordy McBride. Nadene is, in my opinion, a gourmet cook and we enjoyed three days of delicious, healthy meals that were always followed by a homemade dessert and coffee and tea. Jordy was our guide and took us on the outings and explained everything to us about the equipment we were using, the proper way to paddle, or how to rock climb and zipline. When we were hiking through the forest he would teach us the history of the land and show us many wild flowers and different kinds of trees.

The surroundings around MYA are beautiful! It is located in a boreal forest and is filled with huge trees, wonderful rock formations, wild flowers, clear lakes, and blue sky. At night time the stars are so bright and vivid it feels like you can reach out and touch one. It is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. One of my favourite memories is walking down to the water when it was dark and seeing the thousands of fireflies. It was an incredible sight!

Cheri brought her guitar to MYA. We would sit around the campfire each evening and learn new songs from Canada, Japan, Korea and Mexico. We were very lucky to have Cheri join us on this trip. Her knowledge about the outdoors and the energy she brought to the group was amazing. Thank you to all the students who attended and also to Nadene and Jordy at Minaki Yurt Adventures! I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did! Visit www.minaki.ca for more information.

Stay tuned for information about the fall mid-term trip...

Toban Experience

Here is a story from one of our visitors

Wilderness Wanderers - Minaki Yurt Adventure - February 26th & 27th,
2005

I hope you don't mind if I share the wonderful experience we had this
past weekend at Minaki Yurt Adventures. The Yurt was actually very
luxurious in my opinion. It wasn't roughing it at all! The pellet stove heated the
Yurt very efficiently and was controlled by a thermostat. There were bunks
and futons to sleep on. Two futons faced each other across a coffee table
beside the pellet stove creating a cozy social area. The Yurt included
a little kitchen area for food preparation with a sink but no running
water. There were pails under the sink drain which we carried out and emptied.
A picnic style table with two benches for eating sufficed well. It was
like a little round cabin and I felt I could be quite content to live there
more permanently!

A newly built sauna with a window facing the lake in the
valley was enjoyed on more than one occasion by several of the group
which felt awesome following a nice long ski or snowshoe hike.
The trails were the most beautiful and well-groomed I have ever been
cross-country skiing on and afforded the opportunity for some thrilling
slolom-style slopes. The scenery was sooooooo spectacular - actually
breathtaking and I really cannot express how it made me feel. Nature
certainly does wash your worries away and reminds you why life is worth
the journey. The scenery reflected that of a miniature BC (due to the
exception of high mountain summits in the distance). The rocky peaks at Minaki
equal those near Mantario Lake. The forest at Minaki was quite dense with
very little deadfall and again I cannot express how wonderful it was to
explore the trails through there. I give it five stars. The Yurt overlooked
a little lake nestled in a tiny valley.
We went skiing all afternoon Saturday (a couple of us discovered that
right is not always right!) and then enjoyed a delicious supper. In the
evening, we enjoyed the cozy ambience of the Yurt and the warm companionship of
kindred spirits. Special eats courteous of Sheldon's culinary skills
filled our bellies. Before retiring to dreamland, we went for a lovely
walk outside. It was so mild and gentle in the night air, with the
exception of "a rising moon" that resounded suspiciously like the roar of a train
(wink)!
Sunday morning embraced a beautiful scene as the fresh snowfall had
painted the trees and valley overnight. We ate a scrumptious breakfast and
headed off for another ski on some different trails, rejuvenated by the fresh
layer of snow. All I can say is WOW ! The sun was shining and it was so
warm out, I felt like I could ski forever - I didn't want the experience to
end. Following the ski, some of us went snowshoeing on a trail that wound
around the lake to another Yurt and then went on through the forest to another
tiny lake. Snowshoeing was truly a pleasure allowing a deeper indulgence of
nature due to it's slower pace than skiing. It also provided an  excellent
workout from ascending and descending the ravines and hills, and even
included a little "downhill snowshoeing/boarding action"! We then
enjoyed a hearty lunch following which some of the group retired to the sauna for
one last steamy blast. Then it was time to head home but my heart wanted
to stay longer. It would be wonderful to return some day.

Hats off to Mya and Dan for organizing such a fun excursion!
